Part I Dialogue Communication (10 minutes, 10 points, 1 for each)
Section A  Dialogue Completion  
Directions: In this section, you will read 2 short incomplete dialogues between two speakers, each followed by four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the answer that best suits the situation to complete the dialogue by marking the corresponding letter with a single bar across the square brackets on your machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET. 
Example: 
 [A]: Beach Motel. May I help you?
 [B]:           .
   A. Thank you. I’d like to make a long distance call to New York.
   B. Yes. We need a double room for this weekend. 
   C. Sorry. I don’t think you can help us. Thank you any way.
   D. All right. My name is David Jones and my room number is 301.


Answer: B 
1. A.: I'm sure glad that today’s physics class is over. What did you think of the lecture?  
B.: ___________.
A. Sorry to hear that. Are you a fool?     
B. I was lost. I couldn’t follow a word Professor Harrison said.  
C. By the way, do you mind going to ask the professor himself?  
D. Anyway, physics class is different from math. Class.

 
2. A.: Excuse me. Do you mind if I borrow that newspaper for a little bit?
B.:___________. 
A. I’m glad to. But it doesn’t belong to me.    
B. You are welcome. But it’s not mine.         
C. I’m sorry. But it doesn’t belong to me.    
D. OK. You can read it, though it is not mine.


Section B  Dialogue Comprehension
Directions: In this section, you will read 2 short conversations between a man and a woman. At the end of each conversation there is a question followed by four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to the question from the four choices given by marking the corresponding letter with a single bar across the square brackets on your machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET.
Example:
 [Man]: Did you tell Sally she has failed the exam again?
   [Woman]: No. I didn’t have the heart to tell her.
   [Question]: What does the woman mean?
    A. She doesn’t like a heart to heart talk with Sally.
    B. She thinks the topic is too serious for her.
    C. She thinks the news is too bad for Sally.
    D. She dares not to tell Sally the bad news.

6. [man]: Look at the delicious sandwiches. John’s really gone all out this time. 
[woman]: Just wait until you see the dessert.  
[question]: What does the woman imply?
A. They should wait for John to bring the dessert.  
B. He thinks John must have spent a lot of money for the dinner.
C. The dessert looks impressive.
D. He helped John make the sandwiches.


7. [woman]: Did you catch our very own Professor Stiller on TV last night?
[man]: I almost missed it! But my mother just happened to be watching at home and gave me a call.
[question]: What does the man mean?
A. He watched the television program with his mother.
B. His mother told him his professor was on television. 
C. Answering the phone caused him to miss the television program.

8. [woman]: I didn’t catch what Professor Burke said about the calculators.  
[man]: Well, she said we will be doing a lot with statistics in the class. So they should really come in handy.
[question]: What does the woman mean?
A. Professor Burke  will give out calculators to his students.   
B. Calculators will be useful in the class.
C. Statistical calculators should be done by hand.
D. It’s necessary to take good care of the calculators. 


9. [Man]: I cam in here to get something from my briefcase and now I forgot what I wanted. 
[Woman]: You were going to show me a newspaper article.

10. [Man]:  The washing machine in our apartment is more that 17 years old and it worked just fine until last night. 
[Woman]: You will never be able to get parts for it. It might be time to invest in a more recent model. 
[Question]: What does the woman imply about the washing machine?
A. It wasn’t a good investment.
B. It should have lasted another 17 years.
C. The man should not try to buy new parts for it.
D. The man won’t be able to get it repaired.
